If you aren't already aware, I'm a bit of a history nut. Ok, I'm an extreme history nut. Thus, you can see why the quiet island of Ocracoke in the Outer Banks was a must visit for me. From Hatteras Island, you catch an hour long ferry (cars & all ha) to Ocracoke. Once you arrive, you feel as though you have taken a step back in time. Its relaxed atmosphere filled with charming cottages is more than perfect for a getaway from the real world. But, don't let this quaintness fool you. Before it was settled in 1750, pirates ruled the land.
The most famous of these pirates of whom called this place home in between traveling the seas was the legendary Blackbeard. Originating from England, his real name was Edward Teach. He stood very tall & rocked a long black beard, striking fear into those who would cross his path. It is said that he would light fuses that would smoke in his beard, as well as placing burning rope under his hat when entering battle to frighten his opponent. He was killed in Ocracoke in 1718 during battle by one of Lt. Robert Maynard's men of the Royal Navy. His head, which was chopped off, was taken & hung on the bow of Maynard's sloop to warn pirates of their evil ways. And his body? Well, it was thrown into the Pamlico Sound where his headless body was said to have swam around the boat seven times seeking revenge. His treasure? Never found & still lies hidden in the Outer Banks. So, my history was a bit gruesome. But, who doesn't enjoy a great pirate tale?
The pretty little island is now a fishing town with most of the livelihood sourcing from that of tourism. It's population is less than a 1,000...so you can only imagine how quaint & tiny Ocracoke actually is. As you can see, its perfect for a bike ride or three.
