DIY: Crackle & Chevron

Sunday, May 12, 2013

Tools Needed: Putty Knife, Wide Paintbrush, Small Paintbrush,  Martha Stewart Paints: Crackle, Glitter, Primer/Sealer & Metallic Paint.  Not Shown but still needed: blue painter's tape, a solid color paint & small paint brushes for detailing.
Colors I chose: Crackle in Oat; Metallic in Golden Pearl; Glitter in Gold Dust.  (All found at your local Home Depot.)

Last Item Needed: Piece of furniture.  I chose a nightstand.

Step 1: Paint the furniture w/ Metallic paint.  (Note: Due to the extreme yellow this nightstand was before, I had to paint it a solid white as a base before the metallic.)  The metallic paint is somewhat light, so paint a few coats to reach your desired color.  This does not have to be a perfect paint job, as the crackle will be going over it.

Step 2: After the metallic paint has dried, use the primer/sealer and paint over the entire piece.  This will dry clear & act as a base for the crackle paint.  Next, using the putty knife smear the crackle all over the furniture.  Use a small paintbrush to get into all the corners & around the feet.
Step 3: Paint the drawers of the piece a solid color.  I chose white to go well with the gold & the Oat crackle.  You will be able to see this color in the finished product-so paint it well!

Step 4: Using blue painter's tape, measure & mark off the chevron stripes.  I chose to do a medium size-but you can do chevron in small or large-this is up to you!  Using the metallic paint, paint a base layer for your stripes.  Once this dries, paint over it using the glitter paint.  I painted a few coats so that it was very sparkly.  Once this dries completely, peel off the painter's tape.  (Note: Use caution when peeling the tape as the glitter tends to peel easily.)

Step 5: Using a small paintbrush, I detailed around the grooves of the nightstand with the metallic gold paint to add a finishing touch & really make the gold pop!

More detailing.

Your crackle should look something like this once the finished product is done.  After achieving your desired look, use the primer/sealer once more to go over the entire piece of furniture to prevent scratches, etc.

Step 6: The last item you will need are knobs.  I chose these porcelain hand-painted knobs from  Anthropologie for a vintage look.
Step 7: Screw the knobs tightly into place once the primer/sealer has dried.
Finished Product!

Hi everyone!  I hope that your week has flown by as fast as mine! As many of you know, I have been doing lots of DIY's for around the house, giving my home a fresh makeover for spring.  This is my latest project which I have been chipping away at for a few weeks now.  Perfecting the colors & finding the perfect knobs is quite the task.  It is a little more time consuming than my past DIY's, but as you can see, well worth the effort.  Crackling furniture is something that has been around for quite some time now & leaves you with a vintage-looking piece.  The chevron print is very popular right now & on furniture it is a lot of fun to add to any room in your house!  I couldn't help but combine the two ideas into one piece for a modern vintage look.
Also, a special shout out to my mom!  Happy mother's day!! Thank you for always inspiring me to be a creative & better person.  You're amazing.  I love you very much.
